A POLYCLONAL -ANTIBODY-IMMUNOPEROXIDASE-CONJUGATE FOR THE SPECIFIC DETECTION OF PORCINE CIRCOVIRUS TYPE 2 Rev Salud Anim.
Pérez,L.J.; Díaz de Arce,Heidy; Barrera,Maritza; Castell,Sara; Frías,María T.
Porcine circovirus 2 is nowadays accepted as the essential infectious agent of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome which causes severe economic losses in porcine production worldwide. The diagnosis of PMWS is a difficult task and must follow three criteria: (i) the presence of compatible clinical signs, (ii) the presence of characteristic microscopic histopathological lesions, and (iii) the presence of PCV2 within these lesions in moderate or high. The presence of PCV2 in lymphoid tissues must be demonstrated by in situ hybridization or immunohistochemical methods. The in situ hybridization is a more complex and expense compared to other diagnostic tools, on the other hand, one problem concerning the immunohistochemical methods for PMWS diagnostic...

Adaptation of a real-time RT-PCR assay for the detection of Schmallenberg virus Rev Salud Anim.
Perera,Carmen L; Rios,Liliam; Frías,María T; Pérez,Lester J.
Schmallenberg virus was first detected in Germany in October 2011, associated with congenital malformations in cattle, sheep and goats. This novel emergent agent causes mild disease in cattle with decreased milk production, fever and diarrhea. In March 2012, the German Institute of Diagnostic Virology, Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut, reported the development and validation of a real-time RT-PCR for the diagnosis of this new virus. The Animal Virology Laboratory at the National Center for Animal and Plant Health in Cuba has adapted the protocol previously reported on the LightCycler platforms using two different mix conditions. In all cases, amplification curves obtained were specific and all the dilutions tested showed an increase in the Ct-values....

PORCINE PARVOVIRUS INFECTIONS IN CUBA Rev Salud Anim.
Díaz de Arce,Heidy; Pérez,L.J; Castell,Sara; Percedo,María I; Domínguez,Patricia; Frías,María T.
To obtain information about the porcine parvovirus (PPV) infection status of pigs in Cuba, tissue samples collected from ill pigs were evaluated using polymerase chain reaction (PCR). The PCR analysis showed the presence of PPV in 12 of the 34 (35.3%) field clinical samples assessed. Pigs from three of the seven swine herds of six different geographic regions were detected to be positive for PPV. A field PPV strain was isolated for the first time in the country. A swine herd showed 57 of 60 sera sampled (95%) positive for PPV specific antibodies by a commercial ELISA. This study is the first report of PPV infecting pigs in Cuban swine herds.
